The Western Province Athletics calendar veers off the beaten track this weekend as runners trade tar for turf to participate in the WPA Cross Country Relay on Saturday, 9 May 2026 at the Willowbridge Greenbelt in Tygervalley.
The action starts at 11:00 with the Social Relay, a 4 x 2km contest open to junior, senior and masters athletes across male, female and mixed teams. With R500 on offer for the winners, the race invites runners to shake off the week and stride into the weekend with purpose.
At 12:00, the spotlight shifts to the Kids Relay, where young runners up to 14 years old will dart through a 4 x 1km course. Like a flock of energetic birds, boys, girls and mixed teams will chase R300 in prize money and the thrill of racing in a vibrant atmosphere.

The Elite Relay at 12:30 promises a surge of intensity. Clubs may field up to two teams per category, with junior, senior and masters divisions battling over 4 x 2km. Here, the pace is expected to crack like thunder, with R1000 awaiting the top team.
At 13:00, the 1 Hour Challenge closes the programme. Runners will test endurance on a looping course, counting laps over 60 minutes. Solo athletes and duos in a parlauf-style relay will dig deep, legs turning like pistons against fatigue.
Entries will be accepted on the day, closing 30 minutes before each event. Prize money will be paid via EFT.
From muddy shoes to roaring cheers, the event offers a chance to rediscover the raw joy of running and to share every stride across social platforms.
