The 2026 Western Province Athletics Cross Country season is preparing to thunder across the Western Cape like a pack of determined runners cresting a muddy hill at sunrise, with the WPA Cross Country League Competition promising fierce racing, season-long consistency battles and rewarding incentives for athletes of all ages.

This year, Cross Country Leagues 1 to 6 will form part of an official individual league competition where every stride carries value. Athletes will earn points at each league event, with winners collecting 20 points, second place earning 19 and third place securing 18, cascading down to 10 points. All remaining finishers will also receive 10 points, keeping the championship race alive across the winter campaign.

The season kicks off with Silwerstroom Strand League 1 organised by the Velocity Athletics Club on Saturday, 17 May 2026 at the Silwerstroom Resort in Atlantis starting at 11:00.

The competition stretches across every age group from Under-8 athletes to runners aged 70 and older, reflecting the broad heartbeat of cross country running. To qualify for the season rewards, athletes must complete all six league events. After the final league, the top three athletes in every category will receive special rewards for their commitment and consistency.

Should athletes finish level on points, the WPACC Championships will serve as the decisive tie-breaker, adding another layer of drama to the season finale.

The WPA Cross Country season unfolds during the winter months across a variety of courses that test endurance, rhythm and resilience like a runner navigating winding trails through heavy rain and biting wind. Each age group competes separately over specific distances tailored to their category.

Often described as the purest form of running, cross country strips the sport back to its raw foundations. Without the confines of a synthetic track or the congestion of road racing, athletes battle nature, terrain and fatigue in a discipline that has shaped generations of elite middle-distance, long-distance and road runners.

WPA is encouraging athletes, clubs and newcomers alike to rediscover their love for running this winter.
