Chloe Serrotti broke a 22-year-old shotput record at the Western Province Athletics (WPA) Multi Events Half League Athletics at the Parow Athletics stadium on Saturday.
Serroti who is still only 14 years old from the Tygerberg Athletic Club set a new shotput record of 13.05 metres in the under 16 age category. She smashed the previous record of 12.27 m set way back in in 1998. Chris-Mari Nel (11.36) from ORAK was second, with Charlotte Cronje (10.62) from the Bellville Athletics club in third place.
According to Edwill van der Westhuizen both he and Serroti’s coach Jean Le Roux have been working on her technique for a while at the Durbanville Throws Academy. Chloe was absolutely overwhelmed with her achievement.
The Chairperson of WPA Track and Field, Sharief Jefferies, was also there to congratulate her afterwards.
“This is magnificent achievement by Chloe. For a 14-year old to break the under 16 shotput record that stood for so many year is absolutely incredible. All her coaches have done sterling work to get her to the level where she is now at a very young age. She is obviously still developing and definitely has a bright future,” said Jefferies.
Serroti started throwing shotput in primary school where she was coached by Lood Hanekom who taught her the basics. She then then went on to the Durbanville Throws Academy to hone her skills even further.
The Durbanville Throws Academy officially opened on 25 November 2020 at Curro Durbanville. WP athletes of Edwill Throws academy was invited to this special event for a practice session. It was a fun yet productive session. The main focus of the facility is to attract athletes of all ages to get involved with discus, shotput and javelin.
