DURBAN – Joshua Cheptegei’s brilliant victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K delivered another reminder that world class road races are measured by more than winning times.

For Western Province Athletics President Farouk Meyer, Sunday’s event showcased the value of giving South African athletes the chance to test themselves against the best runners on the continent while inspiring thousands of recreational runners to be part of the action.

Cheptegei, the multiple Olympic and world champion, claimed victory in 27:19, the second fastest 10km ever run on South African soil. Doreen Cherop announced herself as one of Africa’s rising stars by taking the women’s title in a personal best 30:43.

While the elite performances grabbed the headlines, Meyer believes the greatest impact was felt throughout the field.

“I need to congratulate Stillwater Sports for staging this event,” Meyer said.

“It was fantastic to watch elite athletes from all over Africa competing here. Although the 27-minute barrier wasn’t broken, the standard of racing was exceptional.”

The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series has become one of the premier platforms for South African road running, attracting world champions, Olympic medallists and emerging talent onto the same start line.

For athletes from Western Province and every other province, that exposure is invaluable.

Competing against Africa’s leading distance runners offers an opportunity that training sessions cannot replicate. The pace is relentless, the atmosphere electric and the lessons immediate. Personal bests are chased alongside global stars, while younger athletes gain a clearer understanding of the standards required to compete at the highest level.

“It is absolutely great that athletes from all the different provinces get the opportunity to race against these elite athletes from Africa,” Meyer said. “It can only benefit them.”

WPA athlete Anthony Timoteus described the experience as both humbling and motivating.

“Standing on the same start line as someone like Joshua Cheptegei gives you a different perspective of what excellence looks like. You see the professionalism, the preparation and the intensity. It pushes you to believe that you also belong on these stages if you’re prepared to put in the work.”

Fellow WPA runner Deon-Lee Hendricks believes events of this calibre accelerate an athlete’s development.

“You cannot put a price on racing against world champions. It raises your standards because you’re competing in a genuinely world class field. Every kilometre teaches you something and you leave the race with far more experience than when you arrived.”

That is precisely why the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series continues to occupy such an important place on South Africa’s athletics calendar.

Elite athletes chase records. Emerging runners chase personal bests. Thousands of recreational participants chase healthier lifestyles. Together they create an atmosphere where performance and participation thrive side by side.

As the Series moves towards Tshwane and Joburg, its greatest contribution may not be measured by winning times alone.

It is measured by the confidence it builds, the standards it raises and the belief it instils in athletes who one day hope to become the champions that inspire the next generation.

The Series also continues to strengthen the broader running community. Elite athletes pursue records, club runners chase personal bests and thousands of first-time participants celebrate crossing the finish line. Every runner contributes to an event that continues to raise the profile of South African road running.
