In the cradle of Langa, where the streets whisper stories of struggle and triumph, the rhythmic pounding of sneakers will once again echo through its heart this July—beating not just to the cadence of breath and sweat, but to the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
The TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom 10km is more than just a race. It’s a soulful stride through history, a communal sprint toward unity, and a celebration of resilience during Mandela Month.
What was once a postponed dream has found its perfect lane. Now rescheduled for Sunday, 20 July 2025, the TymeBank Langa 10km Run4Freedom seamlessly slips into the slipstream of Madiba’s memory, running parallel to the values he stood for: unity, hope, and social justice. The event is no longer just a run—it’s a baton-passing ceremony of heritage and hope.
“It holds extraordinary meaning that the race is now being held during Mandela Month,” said TymeBank CEO Karl Westvig.
“Supporting this race means supporting Langa’s vibrant running culture, and as lead sponsor we couldn’t be more excited to be part of something so meaningful to this unique township. It’s going to be a day of unity and shared spirit, where runners from all walks of life come together as one.”
A Township Tapestry: Woven with Steps and Spirit
Celebrating its fourth edition, the race unfurls like a vibrant township tapestry, inviting 1,800 expected runners to lace up and immerse themselves in Langa’s rhythm.
The 10km main event is tailor-made for club runners with fire in their legs and podium dreams in their eyes. For those looking for a more leisurely trot, the 6km fun run is a casual jog through culture, camaraderie, and the township’s warm embrace.

But this isn’t just another start gun and stopwatch affair.
This race threads its way through the soul of Langa—down Washington Street, the township’s oldest artery, and past landmarks that stand like sentinels of South Africa’s layered history.
Here, every stride is a salute to those who walked before, and every corner turned carries echoes of song, struggle, and solidarity.
“There’s something magical about this race that sets it apart from every other event on the running calendar,” said Molebatsi Matube, Chairperson of the TymeBank Langa Athletics Club and Race Organiser.
“Long after crossing the finish line, participants carry these memories with them. It’s the community atmosphere, the way strangers become friends, and the sense of belonging to something bigger.”
A Legacy That Runs Deep
The race is named in spirit after local running hero William Kaptein, whose story continues to ignite the hopes of young athletes with dreams burning in their soles. The streets he once conquered now serve as the proving ground for a new generation.
With the support of the Langa Athletics Club—a powerhouse of untapped talent—these streets don’t just produce runners; they birth role models.
The club itself, established in 2015, was a spark lit to illuminate the township’s youth through running. Since its founding, it has provided a launchpad for athletes to reach city-wide acclaim and planted seeds of self-belief in kids for whom opportunity too often runs in the opposite direction.
From Footprints to Future
The race has come a long way since its inaugural edition on Freedom Day 2022, when then-sponsor Retail Capital helped launch the inaugural “Run4Freedom.”
When Retail Capital was absorbed into TymeBank, the baton was passed seamlessly and in 2023, the event officially took on its new title: The TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom.
“The Run4Freedom is the first of its kind for Langa,” says the organising team, “and it’s about more than kilometres and medals. It’s about what happens before and after the race—the togetherness, the empowerment, the celebration of Langa as a community on the rise.”
TymeBank’s role isn’t confined to sponsorship dollars and branding. Their support has been pivotal in reinvesting race proceeds back into the Langa Athletics Club, funding youth programmes, training camps, and mentorship projects that keep the flame of athletic excellence burning bright.
Mandela Month: A Spiritual Second Wind
As the calendar clicks into July and Mandela Month kicks off, the alignment between this community-rooted race and the spirit of uTata Madiba couldn’t be more poetic. After all, what better way to honour his legacy than by lacing up your shoes, embracing a stranger at the starting line, and racing toward a common finish?
Running is often called the great equaliser—no hierarchy, no ego, just you, the road, and the will to keep going. And in a place like Langa, where streets have known both sorrow and song, a race like this becomes an act of renewal—a collective push toward something better.
“This isn’t just a race—it’s a story told in strides, a township symphony scored in footfalls,” says Matube. “And in Mandela Month, it becomes a heartbeat of hope.”
So, whether you’re chasing a personal best or just chasing joy, the TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom offers a chance to run not just through Langa—but with it. In every cheer, every clap, and every shared water sachet, you’ll find the beating heart of a township that refuses to jog quietly into the future.
On Sunday, Langa isn’t just hosting a race. It’s hosting a movement. One footstep at a time.
