WPA loses brilliant race walker Envor Rhodas in tragic circumstances

On behalf of Western Province Athletics (WPA) we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of race walker Envor Rhodas who passed away in tragic circumstances over the weekend.

He was only 32-years old.

Rhodas was a dedicated member of Easterns Kraaifontein Athletics Club from the age of seven. He also represented Sanlam Athletic Club for one year.

Envor was a brilliant athlete who has been winning race walking medals since he was a junior. He represented WPA on 2 March at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) 20km Race Walking Championship at the Youngsfield Military base in Wynberg, Cape Town.

Last year he was crowned WPA 10 000m Race Walking champion on the track. He was also WPA 20km Race Walking Champion in 2022 and 2023, as well as the 10km champion in 2023.

He had the distinction of representing WPA at the ASA Nationals in 2022, 2023 and 2024. In October 2023 in Pretoria, he was a member of the WPA Race Walking Relay Team and his team came home with a bronze medal.

We, Western Province Athletics (WPA), the WPA Race Walking Committee as well as the whole of the athletics fraternity was shocked by the news Rhodas tragic passing in the prime of his life.

“WPA has lost a great sportsman, and we are all still in disbelief. Envor was a humble and dedicated athlete who was always open to new ideas and techniques in Race Walking,”

“For the Race-Walking Community and especially his coach since his primary school days, Mandy Skinner, his passing is a massive loss. Envor always represented WPA with distinction. It will not be easy to groom someone of his calibre again.”
