Castle of Good Hope Hosts Emancipation 10km Race: Online Entries Closing Tonight

This is a Western Province Athletics League fixture that blends heritage, history and hard-earned sweat in one powerful stride.

Described by organisers as a race where “every step honours a story,” Phoenix AC says the event is more than just a 10km loop.

“We want runners to feel the weight of the past and the hope of the future with every kilometre,” a spokesperson explained.

The Castle,  South Africa’s oldest surviving colonial building,  becomes both stage and symbol, offering athletes a rare chance to sprint through centuries of history “like runners breaking chains with each foot strike.”

Registration on race day opens bright and early from 05:30 to 07:00, while online entries slam shut on 20 November 2025.

The gun fires at 07:00, sending runners streaming outside of the Castle gates.

The final cut-off is 09:00, with prize-giving at 09:30.

Every finisher earns a medal – “a small piece of victory shaped in metal” – along with access to a Castle tour until 12:00, giving tired legs a slow, proud wander through Cape Town’s oldest bastion.

Race fees are R110 for licensed athletes and R170 for non-licensed runners. Number collection happens on race day only.
