In the vibrant theatre of South African road running, where the rhythm of ambition meets the tempo of tenacity, a local Cape Flats athlete stand poised at the starting blocks of a defining moment.
On Sunday, July 13, under Durban’s humid breath and coastal breeze, Bruce-Lynn Damons will lace up not just for another 10K—but for a deeper run into legacy, identity, and the pursuit of speed on the fast, flat track of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K.
Damons: A Manenberg Meteor Ready to Ignite
From the rough streets of Manenberg to the manicured route along Durban’s Golden Mile, 29-year-old Bruce-Lynn Damons is a runner in the middle of a powerful metamorphosis. Once a 1500m tactician with a blistering best of 3:40.05, Damons has recalibrated his engine for the longer road, where the sprint is stretched, and the pain is poetic.
Like a mechanic fine-tuning his race car in the workshop of hardship, Damons has been grinding away—ticking off milestones with metronomic consistency since joining TymeBank Langa Athletics Club earlier this year. A 29:29 at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, a silver at the Western Province Championships, and a gritty defense of his Gugs Youth Day 10K title in 29:36, have put him squarely in the slipstream of South Africa’s top 10K contenders—despite training at sea level.
“We kicked off the season with two solid performances – the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K and the Western Province Athletics 10km Championships,” says Damons.
“It’s been a tough training block, and I’m proud to see the work begin to translate. I’m excited to run the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K because I’ve never run it before, and I hear it’s a fast race. My aim is to break my personal best and get close to a top ten finish.”
With legs that churn like pistons and a heart that beats to the drum of the Cape Flats, Damons doesn’t just want to compete—he wants to crash through the sound barrier of his own limits.
The Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, now an institution on the local calendar, has grown into more than just a race—it’s a symphony of colour, culture, and competition. With a R322,000 prize purse up for grabs and a R200,000 bonus dangling for those who dare flirt with South African records, the 2025 edition is set to blaze with potential.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to witness athletes stepping up to the 10km distance and showing consistent improvement within the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports.
“The action is heating up in Durban, and we wish all the athletes the very best as they prepare to deliver exceptional performances.”
With a fast course that hugs the Indian Ocean and a carnival of support lining the streets, Durban is where dreams sprint under palm trees and pressure. And whether you’re a debutant with fire in your belly or a queen chasing glory, the road is open, and the stakes are high.

Damons remind us that every race is more than a contest of legs—it’s a race of the spirit.
And in Durban, the spirit will fly.
