Xaba ready to charge at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K on National Heritage Day!

By Jacky McClean

Glenrose ‘Supercharge’ Xaba has set her sights on the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K that will return to Jozi for the first time since 2019 (due to the pandemic) and will take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square on Saturday 24 September 2022 (National Heritage Day).

A lady on a mission, the dominative Boxer Athletics Club and PUMA athlete has been in scintillating form of late, winning three of her last four races in the last month, amongst them the South African 10km title in emphatic fashion. “I haven’t won or been on the podium at any of the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series races yet this year, so I want to make sure I get on the podium this time round. Preferably with a win,” said Xaba.

Xaba will face a challenging line up with the ever consistent, Kesa Molotsane sure to make the going tough. While Xaba will take huge motivation from her dominant SA 10km win where she broke a quality field at the halfway mark, Molotsane was coming off the back of an injury and only getting back into shape at the National Championships and was still able to finish in second. She will be a much harder question to answer in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K.

In fact, the top four athletes of those championships will once again meet on 24 September. A resurgent Diana-Lebo Phalula, who, like Xaba is a renowned front runner, will be sure to keep the pace up front quite frenetic. And write off Cacisile Sosibo at your peril. Only 11 seconds separated Molotsane (2nd), Phalula (3rd) and Sosibo (4th) the last time this trio met. So, all indications are that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K will be a showstopper. While on paper Xaba is the favourite, she is by no means complacent. “Everyone has their own strategy on race day. I like to be in the front, and I will focus on my race. But I know that I still need to keep an eye on my opposition. I cannot let them dictate the race.”

In celebration of its return to Jozi, the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K will boast a new route which for the first time will include sections of the M1 and M2 Highways, providing runners with glorious views of the city. For Xaba, an eleven-time national champion, the change in route brings with it its own special appeal. “Running on the highway is a special treat for us runners. It is an experience we seldom get to feel, so I am really looking forward to it.” Xaba goes on to say that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is unique. “We are used to running hard and pushing the pace, but it gets tough and sometimes a bit lonely up front when you are so focused on your race. The water points, activations, and vibe points give us a lift when we go past them. The support and motivation are also incredible.”

Kesa Molotsane is a big fan of Art and Culture and for her it’s a big honour to be able to run on Heritage Day. “I’m quite excited about how this year is unfolding in racing, especially in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. It’s been a long time since I have run the Johannesburg leg and I am excited to be running here again on Heritage Day. My training has been going according to plan and I expect a good race.”

Stillwater Sports Managing Director and founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series; Michael Meyer echoes the thoughts of Xaba. “The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is all about fun, entertainment and providing an experience for both our top athletes and the masses of social runners. We want to provide the opportunity for our best to race the best and be rewarded for their hard work while at the same time providing the rest of the field with an experience that they will never forget. This means that we are constantly adding new initiatives and elements to the series. In running on the M1 and M2 Highways we have added a new dimension to the race, making the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10K even more memorable.”
