Clubs jockey for Top 10 positions at Halfway Mark of WPA Coca Cola League

As the Coca-Cola Road Running League hits its halfway mark, the race for Top 10 honours has become a high-stakes tactical shuffle. With just one foot out of place threatening to derail months of effort, every stride counts as clubs sprint toward the finish line of the 12-event series, where only the best 11 results will be tallied.

At this stage, ARD Athletics Club has surged ahead with 400 points, running like a well-oiled machine at the front of the pack, their lead looking as firm as fresh tar on race day. But behind them, the real drama is unfolding.

Like runners locked in a final sprint, Pinelands, Kuilsriver, and Edgemead are shoulder to shoulder on 382 points—an athletic deadlock where one misstep or missed race could cost a podium place. Just a few paces behind, Ommiedraai (362) is shadowing their every move, waiting for one of them to falter.

Hewat (354) is still within kicking distance in fifth, with Brimstone Itheko and Goodwood Harriers sharing a photo-finish tie on 352, making sixth and seventh place too close to call. Mitchells Plain Titans (326) and Century City (324) round off the top 10—still very much in the chase, but needing a strong kick in the second half.

With only 11 results out of 12 to count, there’s no room for spectatorship now. Clubs who’ve already tripped early can’t afford another stumble. The next chance to make up lost ground—or tighten an already breathless race—is the Bonteheuwel 10km on 24 August.

Will this fast, flat northern suburbs course shake up the pack? Or will ARD continue to dictate the pace while the rest jostle for position? One thing’s clear: in this league, every race is a finish-line moment.

Please note that 11 out of 12 events will count, so if you already have a low score you cannot afford to miss a race.

The next league race is the Bonteheuwel 10km on 24th August.

Perhaps a chance for the Northern Suburb clubs to make a move?
