Over the last two years, we have come up with the #OneTeamOneDream slogan. This slogan ensures we cohesively work together from the board level across to the athletes. We have to ensure those guiding organisational strategy represent the different stakeholders in our network. With over 17 000 club members across the greater Cape Town Metropolitan, there are so many valuable voices and perspectives to account for in our planning process.
Towards the end of 2018, WPA rewarded its top athletes for their hard work, dedication, commitment and achievements throughout the season at the 2018 Annual WPA Awards Function held at the Athlone Civic Main Hall on Friday, 16th November 2018.
In 2018, WPA Development started planning a High Performance Centre/Academy to be implemented in 2019. The idea is for the federation to be the market leader in the development and provision of services to elite sports talent at a provincial level with specific emphasis on Track and Field athletes at the moment. This year, we want to strengthen and support the federation’s commitment to the development of talent for high performance sports by;
- Providing an environment in which talented young sportsmen and women can be developed in an integrated and holistic manner.
- Providing facilities and expertise that will enhance the development and performance of sports talent on provincial, national and International levels.
- Leading and mentoring similar initiatives/institutes’ countrywide and for the continent by leading the way, determining the pace, thereby protecting our business and securing long term sustainability.
In the last quarter of 2018, our finance department together with the marketing department started implementing the Business 4 Athletics idea, headed up by Allen Barnes. The idea is to use athletics as a business, amalgamating all our suppliers in one database to make it easy for clubs to get access. This new business venture will surely be a source of income in the coming fiscal years and benefit the federation along with the athletes and clubs.
We are battling to attract young athletes, especially girls to our sport. We are embarking on working with schools to attach themselves to the local clubs in their areas. We would like to encourage clubs to work with schools in their areas, as we are striving to assist young people to join the athletic family.
I’d like to take this opportunity to express just how proud I am, when seeing our federation’s growth in terms of both visibility and popularity throughout the province. In 2018, we reached our goal of having above 18 000 licensed athletes and our temporary licence athletes also increased substantially.
That being said, I would also like to mention that our events cannot be organised without the support of local organisations, local communities, sponsors, the City of Cape Town and of course, many volunteers. Without them, we cannot successfully organise athletic events, championships and, therefore, I am using this opportunity also to thank them for their time, assistance and support for the organisation.
To the WPA Board, Commission and committees club executives, athletes and all our families that support our wonderful sport, Thank you for your dedication and commitment to the sport. We are committed to work together contributing towards the development and transformation of our society through athletics.
Let us work together as one team with one dream.
I thank you
