There is a resurgence in Middle Distance running in Western Province and it is about time. Last year we saw 2 runners go sub 14min over the 5000m distance. The 2 guys, leading the assault, are Ashley "Blockie" Smith and Anthony "Timmy "Timoteus. The Winter was good to them as they are back with an eagerness to improve even further.

At the WPA Middle Distance Festival at Parow, Timmy showed his form over the 5000m, clocking 14:12.20, but the 1500m was the big "Hello!"

Making use of a pace setter (a real one!) Ashley managed to muscle a PB in 3:43.31, with Timmy taking official 2nd in 3:52.47. Now, Bruce-Lynn Damons was dq'ed as a result of lane infringements, along with a couple of others, but add to the mix Sibusiso Magwaza's 3:50.96 of last week and in form Du-Wayne Philander and the 1500m has the makings of becoming a jewel event!

Darren Stevens managed a win over the 800m in another 1:52 clocking and there are a number of exciting runners on the rise, but it will take a while before we have another 800m final with the last guy crossing the line in 1:50... That really happened. But Darren was a great pacer in the 1500m and it is something that should be considered in future races.

The table is set for Middle Distance Running to become a feast again. Just on a side though, Timmy is showing great form for the 5000m and Ashley actually wants to do SteepleChase... Let's hold thumbs they do not forget how exciting they can make the Metric Mile....

On another note: Which of these do you think will be 1st to pull off an actuall Dream Mile on the track? I'm a purist in that sense, it must be done on the track...

As always, thanks Roger Sedres for the pics!
