This Wednesday 25 July 2018, sees the return of The WPA Street Athletics series. Thus far Western Province Athletics has successfully supported 2 of 3 Street Athletics events with the help of host clubs.
The first of the Street Athletics series started in Eersteriver on the 21st February 2018. Coming off a well-rounded 2017 series both WPA and Eersteriver Athletics Club had a good understanding of what was to be done prior to the event. The participation increased at this event and the club confirmed that they would love to be part of the series come 2019.
13th March 2018 saw the 2nd street athletics event in Atlantis with hosts Velocity Athletics Club proving a good set up with ample space along the roads and keen club helpers to assist the event. The event ran smoothly with the highlights of the day being the mass participation and the parents race that was a crowd favourite on the day.
The 3rd Street Athletics event scheduled on the 16th May in Capricorn Park, Muizenberg was cancelled due to the unrest in the area at the time. Although the event was cancelled the club has indicated that they would want to be involved in future.
The WPA assistance team made up of a few of WPAs top track and field as well as cross country athletes helps on the day to bring this amazing concept together. Their involvement shows their willingness to give back to the sport they love.
2018 Street Athletics series has 5 events left for this calendar year which are Bonteheuwel 25th July, Khayelitsha 15th August, Lwandle 29th August, Top Form 12th September and Bottleray 24th October.
