Are you keen to run injury-free, with renewed strength & improved performance as you train for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon or any other demanding race in 2018?
In a recent spot survey conducted on runners by the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA), although more than half of the respondents did either no, or only one session of strength training per week to supplement their running, more than two-thirds realised that it could decrease their risk of injury, increase the strength of their running muscles and possibly improve their performance. Ninety-two percent of those surveyed were hungry for more information about strength training and the programmes available.
With this in mind - the SSISA has developed a highly novel 10 week eccentric strength-training programme using the Grucox Isokinetic Ergometer brought to runners in association with FUTURELIFE®. Unlike a traditional exercise bike, the Grucox Ergometer contains a motor, which moves the pedals for the user, whose objective is to slow the pedals down. In this way the ergometer combines eccentric and concentric exercise training.
Eccentric training occurs when the muscles lengthen whilst generating force - for example when lowering a weight, walking downhill or performing a squat which offers enormous benefits. Eccentric training is highly efficient - so saves precious time. A decreased risk of injury and potentially better performance – are other wins.
The programme will kick off with a workshop at the SSISA at 17h45 on 25 January 2018 and sessions will take place in the Endurance studio which houses 10 Grucox bikes and 10 Watt bikes. With just two 60 minute sessions a week, which include core and stability work –the time investment is small. Morning sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6h00 to 7h00 and evening sessions will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18h00 to 19h00. Since data talks, baseline, mid and final strength assessments are conducted on all participants.
